What is Endocrinology

Endocrinology is one of the most important super specialized branches of medicine. It is the science of hormones. Hormones are highly active chemical substances secreted from endocrine glands. Endocrine diseases can occur in any age and sex. Diseases occur due to deficiency or excess of one or many hormones in the body. Some endocrine diseases occur because of deranged relationship of one hormone with others. Hormones tend to affect the fundamental chemical reactions (Metabolic reactions) of the body and hence they have the potential to significantly alter the composition of the body including the brain. They affect not only every part of the body but also the mind. Endocrine diseases are generally slow to develop and their initial symptoms are vague. They are therefore difficult to recognize. They require specialized investigations for their accurate diagnosis. Most of the endocrine diseases are life-long and lead to gradual development of complications. These diseases, in due course of time, tend to become extremely debilitating and even life threatening. The golden rule about managing endocrine diseases is ‘Early Diagnosis and Comprehensive Management’. Fortunately, most of the hormonal diseases, if diagnosed early, can be treated to perfection. Various diseases included in the discipline of Endocrinology are as follows –
